While we have the privilege to ‘walk’ for pleasure and exercise, African grandmothers walk every day collecting firewood and water or are on their feet all day long supporting their grandchildren and the orphans in their care. We walk in solidarity with African Grandmothers. Last year we had a virtual walk around South Africa. If you want to learn more - click here.

2021 marks the 15th anniversary of Nelson Grans to Grans raising funds for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. This will be our 13th annual Stride To Turn The Tide Walk to raise funds and awareness for this work. Over time, grandmothers, the unsung heroes of Africa, are now being recognized as community experts and vital agents of change in their communities!
African grandmothers nurture, feed and raise the new generation. They work to educate themselves and their grandchildren about HIV prevention, care and treatment. They tend to the sick in their communities, help the recently bereaved, set up support groups and harvest the crops. They have become small business owners to earn a living, and rights advocates for their's and their grandchildren’s protection.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation partners with grassroots community-based organizations that are supporting grandmothers and children in their care, in 15 sub-Saharan African countries hardest hit by the global HIV and AIDS pandemic. Even now there are still thousands of young women infected each week. Many of us have forgotten that the HIV and AIDS pandemic still exists.
And today, it is these grassroots partner organizations that are adapting and changing how they provide services to support the Grandmothers and youth in their communities, helping them deal with the additional needs created by COVID-19.
