2nd Kazuri Jewellery Fundraiser and Luncheon
Nelson Grans to Grans will be providing another opportunity to enjoy and purchase this exquisite jewellery at their 2nd Kazuri Jewellery Fundraiser and Luncheon at the end of May. There will be an exciting new collection of beautiful items as well as some familiar ones that you may have the missed last time. All the pieces reflect the warmth and vibrancy of their African origins.
The jewellery is created in the Kazuri factory in Nairobi, Kenya. Beginning as a small workshop, it has grown into a flourishing business, which employs over 400 women who enjoy good wages and the excellent working conditions that go with Fair Trade membership. All the beads are handcrafted, painted and glazed, and assembled at the factory to make the amazing jewellery pieces that characterize this unique style. In Swahili, Kazuri means 'small and beautiful'. Indeed the jewellery is beautiful, and as a result, the enterprise continues to make a difference in the lives of the women employed there.
The Grandmother Connection--Jewellery sales support the Kazuri workers and their families. Profits go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, which supports the grandmothers of sub-Saharan Africa and over 15 million children orphaned by AIDS living in their care. By purchasing this beautiful Kazuri jewellery, you will be directly supporting the Grandmothers Campaign.
This event will take place Saturday, May 25, from 11 am until 2 pm in the Hume Room at the Hume Hotel in Nelson. A buffet lunch will be served accompanied by a fashion show of clothing from Sensations Dress Shoppe and Cottons beautifully adorned with Kazuri jewellery. Items must be purchased by cash or cheque. Tickets are $20 each and are available in advance only from Cottons at 390 Baker Street and Sensations Dress Shoppe, 534 Josephine Street, Nelson. For more information about the luncheon or the jewellery call Diane at 250.354.0551.
