Grans' Logo Designer
Ralph Critchlow is an artist/illustrator who lives in Summerland B.C. He has been making art for as long as he can remember and says that his style has been influenced by a potpourri of artistic approaches. His motto is “art is fun.........that's as deep as it gets”.
He has illustrated several books--folk tales and children's books. They can be seen at http://www.ethnic.bc.ca/index.html. He also does sculptures in clay. Ralph likes to feel that the clay can have a life and direction of its own. “start with a bit of an idea and hopefully the clay will lead you”.
Ralph was asked by a friend in the Nelson Grans to Grans to design an illustration that depicts Canadian grandmothers supporting African grandmothers. He created the picture that we now use as our logo. The colourful and whimsical design has been used on cards, t-shirts, shopping bags, aprons and the cover of our c.d., all which have been sold to raise funds that have been donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
“My feeling is that an artist should firstly try to please himself. If the results happen to work for others, that can be a cheerful bonus .”
The concept that we had hoped to convey with this illustration must have been successful, as other grandmothers groups have asked to be allowed to use it. With Ralph's blessing, we have been happy to share it. Clearly, there's a 'cheerful bonus' here as Ralph's illustration most definitely works for us.
